Academic Focus: Religion, Biology,Psychology Chemistry, Physics, Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology. This program is open to all majors, but may be particularly suitable to science students with academic interests in the majors listed above.

Eligibility Requirements: Minimum 3.0 GPA; good academic standing; at least 18 years of age; completion of a full year of college; and currently enrolled in a college/university; BIO 141/142, CHEM 141/142, PHY 141/142 and at least one course in Tibetan or Buddhist studies are helpful but not required.

Program Dates: May 20 - June 21, 2010

Students interested in the summer program are also eligible to participate in Emory's semester-long Emory Tibetan Studies Program in Dharamsala, India, which occurs each spring (this program focuses on Tibetan philosophy, culture, and language, and would serve as an excellent foundation for the summer program).

Application Deadline: Applications will be accepted starting January 4, 2010.  The deadline for receipt of applications is March 1.  CIPA encourages students to submit their applications as early as possible because some programs fill up by the end of January. 

Program Information: This program offers students the opportunity to join the emerging dialogue between the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of the Inner science of the mind and the western tradition of science of the External world. Participants on this program engage in an exciting experiment in cross-cultural collaboration that has the potential to lead to breakthroughs in a variety of fields. Students will have the opportunity to learn from some of the best teachers in the western and Tibetan traditions, while actively engaging in dialogue with Tibetan monks and nuns who will be studying neuroscience, biology, and physics in the month-long Emory-Tibet Science Initiative.  The program takes place in Dharamsala, the heard of the Tibetan exile community in India.  No prior knowledge of Tibetan is required. 

Courses: Students take two courses for a total of 8 Emory credit hours.

REL 331 / ANT 390R: Culture of Buddhist Tibet

REL 358RS: Mind, Medicine, and Healing

Living Arrangements: Students will live in the Tibetan Guesthouse on the campus.

Financial Aid/Scholarships: Emory College students who qualify are considered by the Office of Financial Aid for a summer aid award after registration in summer study abroad classes. The amount of the award depends on the number of credits and current financial aid package. Students currently receiving financial aid from Emory are typically eligible. Contact the Office of Financial Aid for information about specific awards. Emory Scholars are informed separately about the procedures for Scholars Summer Study Abroad awards. Emory University Employee Courtesy Scholarships may be applied to the academic fee portion of the summer study abroad program's cost. Application Process: This program is open to both Emory students and to visiting students from other institutions. For questions or assistance, please contact the CIPA Advisor to schedule a meeting or to inquire about the process. In order to apply, students must complete the following steps:

1. Apply online to your program via the on-line application system. Click on the Apply Now link. Emory students will need their Emory login ID and password. Visiting students from other institutions will create a username (current email address) and password through the online system.

2. View the application checklist and requirements. Once you log into the system, you will be required to complete a series of steps through the checklist process. The checklist includes the following types of documents:

Material Submissions: Items that you need to hand into the CIPA office:
(a) $350 application deposit in check or money order form made out to Emory University (to be applied towards the Emory tuition bill)
(b) Photocopy of Passport (can mail or email to CIPA)
(c) print-out of your OPUS transcript (can mail or email to CIPA)

Program Resources:
Orientation: Each summer study abroad program will have a mandatory pre-departure orientation session and/or other pre-departure activities. The Program Director will contact program participants with details. Preparatory meetings will be held for Emory students on campus in the late spring.
