Program Description:

Program Description: The IDN-CIPA Scholars Program is designed for Emory College students who want to combine the teaching and research strengths of Emory University and the Carter Center with a study abroad semester and initial research in the developing world. Courses at Emory University, field-based instruction, a focus on development issues and initial acquisition of less-commonly taught languages during a CIPA study abroad program allow for a theoretic and practical approach to development issues. Each semester, eligible students may apply.

PLEASE NOTE: Students may have to apply for IRB approval at Emory.

ELIGIBILITY
In order to be eligible for the IDN-CIPA Scholars Program, students must:

1.  Be enrolled as an Emory College undergraduate

2.  Have taken at least one development-related course at Emory

3.  Have taken at least one area specific course at Emory

4.  Have agreed to do a presentation at Emory and the Carter Center upon their  return.

5.  Have agreed to be be in charge of planning and hosting a one-day Undergraduate Research Symposium every spring semester. (With minimal guidance from CIPA and IDN, the scholars will have the chance to create a forum on campus where they can present their research and reach out to the smaller and larger Emory community.)

6.  Maintain above a 3.0 GPA

7.  Return to Emory for one semester or more of study after the completion of the
program

8.  Students may apply for a semester or a year to one of the following programs*:

GHANA Arts and Culture
INDIA Indian Culture and Hindi Language OR Tibetan Language, Philosophy, Culture, and Civilization
(INDONESIA, Bali Arts and Culture: suspended until further notice 10/2006)
KENYA Culture, Environment and Development in East Africa
MALI Gender and Development
MONGOLIA Culture and Development
MOROCCO Culture and Society,
NICARAGUA Revolution, Transformation, and Civil Society,
SENEGAL African Studies, Development Studies, and International Relations
SOUTH AFRICA Current Topics in South Africa OR IHRE
UGANDA Development Studies
VIETNAM Culture and Development

Please note: Students must also fulfill the specific program pre-requisites
*Students focusing on developmental topics on other CIPA study abroad programs
should petition to apply to the IDN-CIPA Scholars Program.
 
SELECTION
 
The faculty committee will meet to deliberate over the applications; quite often applicants are then asked to make revisions that go back to the committee. Up to 6 IDN-CIPA Scholars will be selected every semester. Students will receive notifications from IDN.

Application instructions

In order to apply, students must complete the following steps:

1. Apply online to your semester program via the on-line application system.

2. Apply online to the IDN-CIPA Scholarship.  Click the 'Apply now' button.

3. View the application checklist and requirements. Once you log into the system, you will be required to complete a series of steps through the checklist process. The checklist includes the following types of documents:

Material submissions: Items that you need to hand in/email to the CIPA office:
(a) Your statement of purpose
(b) Letter of recommendation from your faculty mentor

Signature documents: Items that you will need to read, complete and/or "digitally sign" on-line:
(a) Release for Funds

Questionnaires: Items that you will need to fill out and answer online:
(a) Additional Academic Information
(c) International Background Information

4. Complete all application materials by the stated deadline below. Upon completion of the online application, CIPA will notify you of the receipt of the completed grant application .

5. All further communication will now be with IDN.

APPLICATION DEADLINE
Students must submit the IDN-CIPA Scholars Program application form by the
following deadline:
For the Spring semester: September 15 (12am)
For the Fall semester: February 15 (12am)

AWARDS                                                                                                                                    Starting Fall 2009, the grant amount will be $2500.

REQUIREMENT AFTER STUDY ABROAD

All IDN-CIPA scholars are required to submit a final report.  Details regarding the structure and outline of the report will be provided after you have received the scholarship award.
