Academics

Academics

For students who want to be immersed in the excitement of modern Britain, living and studying in London is the obvious choice. The cultural life in London is one of the richest and most diverse in the world. Studying in England is very different than what you might be used to. Students are expected to study outside of class to retain a large portion of their subject matter.  Unlike universities in the United States, the majority of each student's grades in England is based on one or two large assignments or solely on the final test - not on class participation or attendance.  This study abroad experience  provides Emory students an independent experience with the opportunity to get to know students from Britain and all over the world.

The Study Abroad program at SOAS is fully integrated, so you will attend the same classes and live in the same accommodation as any other SOAS student. It is critical that you are prepared for immersion into the UK academic system. Here are some important characteristics we think it will be helpful for you to know about the UK academic system
  • Students can choose from over 400 modules and may take courses from several different departments
    • View the SOAS course catalog here
      • SOAS is organized into three terms, fall students attend term 1 and spring students attend both terms 2 and 3
The SOAS module request form is not a registration form; it is a guideline to let SOAS know which courses (modules) you are interested in taking abroad. You should have several backup choices in mind as you will not officially register for your courses until you arrive on campus. During the SOAS orientation you will be given instructions and the paperwork necessary to officially enroll in courses.

Note: Every effort will be made to place you in the courses you request. However, neither SOAS nor Emory University can guarantee placement in any course. Your first choices may not be available due to schedule changes, time conflicts or cancellations. Alternate course approval and flexibility is extremely important.

Housing

Housing

  • Emory students generally live in one of two SOAS student residences (Dinwiddy House or Paul Robeson House), both about a fifteen-minute walk from SOAS
  • Single en-suite rooms are arranged in cluster flats of five to seven rooms with a shared kitchen/dining area
  • Students may also apply for a place in one of the seven University of London's residence halls, which are all close to the campus and provide catering, offering breakfast and evening meals on weekdays and all meals at weekends
  • SOAS (not Emory) assigns housing. Please find additional information about housing here
