Academics

Academics

For students who want to be immersed in the excitement of modern Britain, living and studying in London is the obvious choice. The cultural life in London is one of the richest and most diverse in the world. Studying in England is very different than what you might be used to. Students are expected to study outside of class to retain a large portion of their subject matter.  Unlike universities in the United States, the majority of each student's grades in England is based on one or two large assignments or solely on the final test - not on class participation or attendance.  This study abroad experience  provides Emory students an independent experience with the opportunity to get to know students from Britain and all over the world.

The Study Abroad program at UCL is fully integrated, so you will attend the same classes and live in the same accommodation as any other UCL student. It is critical that you are prepared for immersion into the UK academic system. Here are some important characteristics we think it will be helpful for you to know about the UK academic system
  • Over 2,000 courses are offered in subjects ranging from Anthropology to Religion
  • Students are typically admitted to one department where they take at least 50% of their courses and they take the other 50% as electives from other departments. You can also apply for joint admission to two subject areas, e.g. Anthropology and Linguistics – for joint admission you would be expected to take at least 50% of your modules in the first named subject area and 25% in the second, with the remaining 25% chosen, again, from across UCL.
UCL's module request form is not a registration form; it is a guideline to let UCL know which courses (modules) you are interested in taking abroad. You should have several backup choices in mind as you will not officially register for your courses until you arrive on campus. During UCL's orientation you will be given instructions and the paperwork necessary to officially enroll in courses.

Note: Every effort will be made to place you in the courses you request. However, neither UCL nor Emory University can guarantee placement in any course. Your first choices may not be available due to schedule changes, time conflicts or cancellations. Alternate course approval and flexibility is extremely important.

Housing

Housing

Some halls are within walking distance of the UCL classrooms, and others are a short Tube or bus ride away, which is very typical of universities in central London.
  • Students live in student houses (self-catered) or halls (catered) with other UCL students
  • Intercollegiate halls are for year-long students only and include mandatory meal plans that incur an additional fee
  • UCL (not Emory) assigns housing. Find additional information about housing here
