Academics

Academics

Studying in Scotland is very different than what you might be used to. Students are expected to study outside of class to retain a large portion of their subject matter.  Unlike universities in the United States, the majority of each student's grades in Scotland is based on one or two large assignments or solely on the final test - not on class participation or attendance. This study abroad experience  provides Emory students an independent experience with the opportunity to get to know students from Britain and all over the world.

The Study Abroad program at St. Andrews is fully integrated, so you will attend the same classes and live in the same accommodation as any other St. Andrews student. It is critical that you are prepared for immersion into the UK academic system. Here are some important characteristics we think it will be helpful for you to know about the UK academic system
St. Andrews module request form is not a registration form; it is a guideline to let St. Andrews know which courses (modules) you are interested in taking abroad. You should have several backup choices in mind as you will not officially register for your courses until you arrive on campus.

Note: Every effort will be made to place you in the courses you request. However, neither St. Andrews nor Emory University can guarantee placement in any course. Your first choices may not be available due to schedule changes, time conflicts or cancellations. Alternate course approval and flexibility is extremely important.
