Before your internship begins, students should be approved and enrolled in the course. If you have previously enrolled in INTERN 496, email OISP.internships@emory.edu to transfer your application to INTERN 497

Overview

One pathway to pursue an academic internship is the OISP Independent Internship option: Emory College Summer Independent Internship INTERN 496 credit.  This 1-credit option provides an opportunity for students to earn academic credit in a field related to their course of study. 
This option enables students to:
  • Design their own internship experience (utilize Emory Career Center and/or other networks to find internship)
  • Pay $50 processing fee total
  • Tuition for 1-credit is assessed.  Tuition waiver is applied.  No additional cost to the student.
  • Enroll in INTERN 496 (1 credit) during summer term
  • Obtain approval letter to provide to employer that documents student is earning academic credit for internship
  • For international students only: whether your internship is paid or unpaid, you should work with your ISSS advisor to obtain work authorization in advance, if eligible.
  • Have academic internship credit denoted on the Emory College transcript
  • Earn 1-credit towards total hours needed to graduate
  • NOTE: If you have previously taken INTERN 496, you must apply for INTERN 497: Advanced Practicum for the Major

Eligibility

To be eligible for this course, students must meet the following criteria:
  • Be currently enrolled in Emory College of Arts and Sciences: Business school students or students from all other schools are not eligible to participate. Students who have graduated are not eligible to participate.
  • Be in good academic standing: Students on academic probation are not permitted to participate.
  • Secure an internship within the United States: Exceptions are made for international students returning to their home country for internship experiences.
  • Meet minimum internship hours: 40 hours/week for three weeks, 20 hours/week for six weeks, or an equivalent level of time commitment (120 hours); any exception must be approved by the instructor based on the number of hours and project-based work completed.
  • Internships should fall within the dates of the course: May 17- August 6, 2021
  • Define how the internship experience is an integral part of a student’s academic experience at Emory: Students should identify clear goals of what they want to achieve through the internship. Students should seek internships that are related to their short-term and/or long-term career goals. 
  • For international students only: whether your internship is paid or unpaid, you should work with your ISSS advisor to obtain work authorization in advance, if eligible. International students are required to have a declared major by the time of application.

Students are enrolled in INTERN 496 (1-credit).  This course consists of the following:
  • $50 processing fee total (non-refundable)
  • Tuition for 1-credit is assessed.  Tuition waiver is applied.  No additional cost to the student.
  • 1-hour on-campus or virtual workshop that takes place in late April/early May
  • Evaluation submitted by internship supervisor that verifies total hours completed
  • Online coursework designed to be completed throughout the duration of the internship
  • Course grade is S/U.  Course credit will appear on the transcript.  One credit hour will count towards hours needed to graduate.

  • Attend Intern 101 Session: For questions about the process, please attend an INTERN 101 session.  Sessions are held October-April.
  • Once your summer internship is confirmed, submit the online application:  Application cycle is open late January to mid-July.  Applications are reviewed on a rolling admissions basis.
  • Submit processing fee: $50 fee is required to process your application.  The fee is submitted online (via credit card) at the time of application.  No refunds are provided.
  • Receive INTERN 496 approval: Once your application is complete, it takes approximately 10 business days for final approval.  A letter of approval may be requested for your employer.
  • Verify course enrollment: OISP will enroll you in INTERN 496 (1-credit).  Enrollment takes place in early May.
